Water Vessel (ganga-jumna lota)
India.
19th century.
Copper and brass

The body of this tall and very elegant holy water vessel is embellished with large silver lotus flowers placed for the four directions.  The body is made of copper and
brass, a sophisticated technique unique to India. Known as a Ganga-Jumma, it represents the contrasting colours of the Ganges and Jumna rivers produced by the different colours of alluvial silt staining their waters. This vessel likely carried holy water from one of those rivers.

Lotas are found all over India, the materials they are made from indicate the status of the individual they were made for; the cheapest are terracotta, then brass, Gunga-Jumma and precious metals would be reserved for rich families or temples.
