A mid 19th century red carnelian 9ct gold mounted opium pipe. The goldsmith has fashioned collars to cover the joins in the lapidary-work. Drilling and cutting material such as this is fraught with difficulty as the stone often shatters when heated by work. It's likely the stone cutting is from a German workshop and has been assembled in the Netherlands. Mounts marked, Dutch circa 1870.
